De retour après de si longues années, soit 16 ans après la sublime world-music de "Spiritchaser", Brendan Perry et Lisa Gerrard nous offrent une balade unique à travers leur univers mystique avec ce nouvel opus "Anastasis".
Quelle claque j’ai reçue en apprenant cette nouvelle ! Jamais je n’aurais pensé entendre à nouveau leurs mélodies mélancoliques. Alors que leur tournée d’adieu en 2005 s’achève avec tristesse et beaucoup d’émotions, l’anéantissement dans mon cœur se ressent de par l’annonce de leur séparation. En effet, notre muse Lisa Gerrard indique : « Il y avait beaucoup de tensions entre nous, c’est là que nous avions pris conscience que nous ne voulions pas travailler ensemble avant un moment ». C’est ainsi que pour ce duo d’ensorceleurs, formé depuis 1981 à Melbourne, l’occasion se présente de rompre avec leur label habituel, 4AD, et de faire route chacun de leur côté.
Et quelles routes ils ont pris ! Leur chemin n’est pas tortueux, au contraire car ils se sont épanouis professionnellement dans leur pays respectif, à savoir l’Angleterre pour Brendan Perry et l’Australie pour Lisa Gerrard. Ainsi, Brendan a sorti modestement deux albums solos, "Eye of the hunter" en 1999 et "Ark" en 2010. Quant à Lisa, elle a participé à des bandes originales de films, et non pas des moindres, telles que "Heat", "The Insider", "Gladiator", "Ali", "Mission Impossible 2", "La Chute du Faucon Noir". Sa magnifique mélopée est donc reconnue internationalement à travers ses albums solo.
Et puis le temps de se réunir pour imaginer, créer, arranger et composer est arrivé. Leurs retrouvailles donnent lieu à "Anastasis" sous un nouveau label, [PIAS] Recordings. Ce nom qui signifie "résurrection" en grec prend tout son sens, Brendan Perry étant fasciné par la Grèce et ses beautés de « mosaïque de couleurs musicales »...
Cette huitième merveille, enregistrée dans une ancienne église irlandaise transformée en studio par Brendan Perry, évoque véritablement la réunion de ces deux musiciens. Ce pur bijou, qui nous invite à la méditation et à la rêverie, est certainement moins tribal que les précédents.
Après sept albums studio et un album live, il apparaît clairement que les instruments sont de rigueur, voire indissociables de leurs chants. C’est au moment de leur premier opus "Dead Can Dance" en 1984 qu’ils décident d’expérimenter avec l’orchestration, abandonnant ainsi les guitares pour le trombone ou les violons, entre autres. A la suite de leurs nombreuses aventures, un troisième album, "Within the Realm of a dying Sun" en 1987, voit le jour pour le plus grand bonheur de notre imagination. La magie opère alors car ce duo décide de se partager vocalement les différents titres, nous entraînant encore mieux vers des sonorités inhabituelles et atmosphériques. En 1993, "Into the Labyrinth" confirme l’excellence dans l’utilisation des samples et des sons électroniques, tout en nous invitant à parcourir les inspirations pastorales qu’il dégage.
Alors quelle lumière apporte cet opus me direz-vous ? En effet, en contemplant cette photo en noir et blanc de tournesols fanés sur la pochette, le désespoir et la mélancolie seraient de rigueur. Et pourtant, cet album est tout autre. Dès la première seconde, mon cœur a chaviré pour ce dernier, qui est une ode à la magie et à la sensualité. "Anastasis" trouve entièrement sa place et exprime encore mieux les liens uniques, profonds et subtils, tissés par ces deux amis de longue date. Ces deux multi-instrumentalistes accompagnent leurs voix aux sonorités tourmentées et lumineuses, de guitare, de percussions, de synthétiseur entre autres.
Dès les premiers sons de The children of the sun, interprétée par Brendan Perry, les frissons m’envahissent, laissant alors mon âme impuissante s’évader au rythme de leur création artistique. Celle-ci nous parle de l’évolution humaine, de comment notre code génétique dépend de notre ancienne mémoire, elle évoque notre mère-nature : « We are ancient, As ancient as the sun, We came from the ocean, Once our ancestral home, So that one day, We could all return To our birthlight, The great celestial dome... ». Serait-ce là le Power Flower d’antan ? Flottant entre la réalité et l’imaginaire, l’immersion dans leur monde est totale. Laissez donc vos cœurs être submergés par cette chaleur, laissez-vous transporter comme je le suis dans ce voyage intemporel. Car très chers, vous qui lisez ces quelques lignes, croyez bien que mon pauvre corps est resté figé, tandis que mon âme vagabonde au fil des notes exquises de Anabasis. Ce titre, si bien interprété par Lisa Gerrard, est soufflé si voluptueusement que je me retrouve à flotter entre ciel et terre. Voyez de vos yeux cette vidéo et laissez ces mots et cette ambiance orientale pénétrer vos esprits entièrement. Entendez-vous le hang, cet instrument de musique qui ressemble à un tambour en acier, une sorte de sphère métallique ?
Il en va de même pour cette fascinante composition qu’est Agape, toute aussi orientale et également chantée par Lisa. Cette voix hypnotique accompagnée de violons, dont les sonorités me procurent une douce ivresse est une extase indiscutable. Tout comme ces chants tribaux sur The return of the She-King d’ailleurs. Ressentez cette mélancolie et cette liberté couler dans vos veines de par ses chants de muse, remarquablement puissants et enchanteurs. Percevez-vous le son ensorceleur de cette cornemuse, nous faisant rêver de contrées lointaines, telles les Highlands ?
Continuant à être bercée, Amnesia s’enchaîne, nous incitant à comprendre que nos mémoires, même les plus anciennes, sont vitales et qu’elles nous permettent d’avancer sans refaire les mêmes erreurs. « ...We live in the dreamtime, Nothing seems to last, Can you really plan a future When you no longer have a past... », « ... Memory, help me see, Amnesia, Memory, set me free… ». S‘ensuit alors Opium, ma préférée avec Amnesia. Elles sont à la fois généreuses et profondes en émotion de par la voix si pénétrante et suave qu’est celle de Brendan Perry. Imaginez à quel point, pendant l’écoute de ces tonalités asiatiques d’Opium, ces instruments à corde et le daf, ce tambour iranien dont joue merveilleusement David Kuckhermann (percussionniste berlinois), ont envoûté mon esprit. Entendez ces paroles d’espoir : « I feel like I want to live... », « I feel like I want to fly... », « I feel the ocean in my blood... ». Cette richesse incroyable provoque une telle force en moi que je m’envole, croyant avoir touché la voûte céleste. Oyant la voix barbiturique de Brendan Perry, l’apothéose est jouissive ; tout comme Kiko, dont le final instrumental est fascinant. Utilisant le bouzouki sur cette dernière, un instrument grec ressemblant à un luth, ces harmonies créent un cheminement obscur et magistral. J’en ai le souffle coupé...
L’émotion se fait de plus en plus intense quand arrive enfin All in good time, chantée par Brendan qui termine cette ascension fulgurante. Ce sentiment envahit alors tout mon être avec tant de douceur et d’espoir car il s’agit bien là de communion, de prendre son temps ... « You taught me patience was a vertue so I took my time ». Et ils ont pris le temps nos musiciens universels pour accomplir cet album tant désiré. Et ils ont tellement eu raison de le prendre à l’époque où l’on vit et où l’on court après ce dernier sans cesse... Cela parle de fraternité, d’enfance, d’humanisme. Ces cuivres me transpercent si doucement et symphoniquement. C’est un titre enthousiaste, propice à l’avenir...
Je me sens comme emportée par ces deux voix célestes qui vibrent tout au long de ces huit titres talentueux et ingénieux. Encore une fois, ces deux âmes ancestrales nous montrent, avec passion et professionnalisme, que nos esprits peuvent s’abandonner à leur magie universelle et spirituelle.
Jamais je n’aurais espéré un opus d’une telle beauté, un chef d’œuvre hypnotique et envoûtant. L’album reflète parfaitement la nature ensorcelante du son si caractéristique de ce duo, qui était tourné vers la cold-wave, la world-music, le folk inspiré des musiques médiévales et des musiques sacrées. Ainsi, avec cette ambiance grecque inattendue et inégalable, toutes les frontières disparaissent.
Laissez-moi vous conter avec quel grand désarroi et quels éternels regrets, mon sang restera à jamais glacé à l’idée de ne pas faire partie de tous ces êtres qui seront présents dans cette fameuse salle parisienne en ce 27ème jour de septembre 2012...

But Dead Can Dance is not dead ...
Come back after so long years, about 16 years after the sublime world-music of "Spiritchaser", Brendan Perry and Lisa Gerrard offer us a unique stroll through their mystic universe with this new opus "Anastasis".
What a slap I received by learning this news ! Never I’d have thought listening again their melancholic melodies. While their farewell tour in 2005 ends with sadness and many feelings, the destruction in my heart feels the effects due to the announcement of their separation. Indeed, our muse Lisa Gerrard indicates: « There were many tensions between us, so we were aware that we do not want to work together before a moment ». This is the way for this duet of charmers, formed since 1981 in Melbourne, the opportunity appears to break with their usual label, 4AD, and to take different paths.
What paths they took ! Their paths were not tortuous, no, because they bloomed professionally in their respective country, namely England for Brendan Perry and Australia for Lisa Gerrard. So, Brendan made modestly two solo albums, "Eye of the hunter" in 1999 et "Ark" in 2010. As for Lisa, she worked for movies soundtracks, and not the slightest, such as "Heat", "The Insider", "Gladiator", "Ali", "Impossible Mission 2", "The Fall of the Black Hawk". So her magnificent monotonous chant is recognized internationally through her solo albums.
And then, it was time to meet to imagine, create, arrange and compose together. Their reunion gives birth to "Anastasis" with a new label, [PIAS] Recordings. This name which means "resurrection" in Greek takes all its sense, Brendan Perry being fascinated by Greece and its beauties of "mosaic of musical colors"...
This eighth marvel, recorded in an old Irish church transformed into studio by Brendan Perry, really evokes the meeting of these two musicians. This pure jewel, which invites us in meditation and in musing, is certainly less tribal than the precedents.
After seven albums studio and a live album, it seems clearly that instruments are necessary, even inseparable of their singings. It is at the time of their first opus "Dead Can Dance" in 1984 that they decide on to experiment with the orchestration, so giving up guitars for the trombone or the violins, among others. Following their numerous adventures, the third album, "Within the Realm of a dying Sun" in 1987, is born for the biggest happiness of our imagination. Then which light brings this opus ? Indeed, by contemplating this black and white photo of sunflowers faded on the cover, the despair and the melancholy would be necessary. And nevertheless, this album is quite different. From the first second, my heart capsized for the album, which is an ode to the magic and the sensualism. "Anastasis" finds completely its place and expresses even better the unique, deep and subtle links, weaved by these two old friends. These two multi-instrumentalists accompany their voices within the restless and bright tones, of guitar, percussions, synthesizer among others.
From the first sounds of The children of the sun, interpreted by Brendan Perry, the shivers invade me, letting then my powerless soul escape at the rate of their artistic creation. This one speaks to us about the human evolution, about how our genetic code depends on our ancient memory, it evokes our mother-nature : « We are ancient, Have ancient have the sun, We is on drugs from the ocean, Ounce our ancestral home, So that one day, We could all return To our birthlight, The great celestial dome... ». Would it be Power Flower of former days there ? Floating between the reality and the imagination, the dumping in their world is total. Let your hearts be submerged by this heat, be allowed transport as I am in this timeless journey. Because, dearest readers, you who read these few lines, consider good that my poor body remained motionless, whereas my soul wanders in the course of the delicious notes of Anabasis. This title, so well interpreted by Lisa Gerrard, is so sensually blown that I fell like floating between heaven and earth. See and leave these notes and this oriental atmosphere penetrate into your spirits, completely. Do you hear the hang, this musical instrument which looks like a steel drum, a kind of metallic sphere ?
It's the same for this fascinating composition whom is Agape, quite oriental and also sung by Lisa. This hypnotic voice accompanied with violins, tones and which get me a soft drunkenness is an indisputable ecstasy. Quite as these tribal singings on The return of the She-King moreover. Feel this melancholy and this freedom sink into your veins due to its singings of muse, outstandingly powerful and charming. Do you perceive the bewitching sound of this bagpipe, making us dream about distant parts of the country, any Highlands ?
Continuing to be rocked, Amnesia is linked, inciting us to understand that our memory, even older, is vital and that they allow us to move forward without redoing the same errors. « ...We live in the dreamtime, Nothing seems to last, Can you really plan a future When you no longer have a past... », « ... Memory, help me see, Amnesia, Memory, set me free… ». Opium, my favourite with Amnesia follows then. They are at the same time generous and deep in emotion due to the so penetrating and pleasant voice of Brendan Perry. Imagine to which point, during the listening of these Asian tones of Opium, these stringed instruments and the daf, this Iranian drum which David Kuckhermann (Berlin percussionist) plays magnificently, bewitched my spirit. Hear these words of hope : « I feel like I want to live... », « I feel like I want to fly... », « I feel the ocean in my blood... ». This incredible wealth causes such a strength in me as I fly away, believing to have touched the vault of heavern. Hearing the Brendan Perry's barbiturate voice, the highlight is brilliant ; quite as Kiko, whose instrumental final is fascinating. Using the bouzouki on the latter, a Greek instrument who looks like a lute, these harmonies create a dark and masterful progress. It is so breathtaking…
The emotion is more and more intense when arrives finally All in good time, sung by Brendan who ends this lightning ascent. It speaks about brotherhood, about childhood, about humanism. These brass instruments pierce me so slowly and symphonically. It is an enthusiastic, convenient title in the future to come...
I feel as taken by these two celestial voices which vibrate throughout these eight talented and ingenious titles. Once again, these two ancestral souls show us, with passion and professionalism, that our spirits can give way to their universal and spiritual magic.
Never I would have hoped for an opus of such a beauty, for a mesmerizing and hypnotic masterpieces. The album reflects perfectly the ensorcelante nature of this so characteristic sound from this duet, which was turned to the cold-wave, the world-music, the folk song inspired by the medieval musics and the sacred musics. So, with this unexpected and matchless Greek atmosphere, all the borders disappear.
Let me tell you with how big confusion and eternal regrets, my blood will remain forever ice-cold at the idea of not being a part of the show in this famous Parisian room in this 27th day of September, 2012...
Remain here, comfortably installed, subdued lights, blindly, the relaxation settles down as one goes along. So, you can only feel this internal strength and this hope by listening then this musical exploration.

Come back after so long years, about 16 years after the sublime world-music of "Spiritchaser", Brendan Perry and Lisa Gerrard offer us a unique stroll through their mystic universe with this new opus "Anastasis".
What a slap I received by learning this news ! Never I’d have thought listening again their melancholic melodies. While their farewell tour in 2005 ends with sadness and many feelings, the destruction in my heart feels the effects due to the announcement of their separation. Indeed, our muse Lisa Gerrard indicates: « There were many tensions between us, so we were aware that we do not want to work together before a moment ». This is the way for this duet of charmers, formed since 1981 in Melbourne, the opportunity appears to break with their usual label, 4AD, and to take different paths.
What paths they took ! Their paths were not tortuous, no, because they bloomed professionally in their respective country, namely England for Brendan Perry and Australia for Lisa Gerrard. So, Brendan made modestly two solo albums, "Eye of the hunter" in 1999 et "Ark" in 2010. As for Lisa, she worked for movies soundtracks, and not the slightest, such as "Heat", "The Insider", "Gladiator", "Ali", "Impossible Mission 2", "The Fall of the Black Hawk". So her magnificent monotonous chant is recognized internationally through her solo albums.
And then, it was time to meet to imagine, create, arrange and compose together. Their reunion gives birth to "Anastasis" with a new label, [PIAS] Recordings. This name which means "resurrection" in Greek takes all its sense, Brendan Perry being fascinated by Greece and its beauties of "mosaic of musical colors"...
This eighth marvel, recorded in an old Irish church transformed into studio by Brendan Perry, really evokes the meeting of these two musicians. This pure jewel, which invites us in meditation and in musing, is certainly less tribal than the precedents.
After seven albums studio and a live album, it seems clearly that instruments are necessary, even inseparable of their singings. It is at the time of their first opus "Dead Can Dance" in 1984 that they decide on to experiment with the orchestration, so giving up guitars for the trombone or the violins, among others. Following their numerous adventures, the third album, "Within the Realm of a dying Sun" in 1987, is born for the biggest happiness of our imagination. The magic operates then because this duet decides to vocally divided the various titles, pulling us even better towards unusual and atmospheric tones. In 1993, "Into the Labyrinth" confirms the excellence in the use of samples and electronic sounds, while inviting us to to go through the pastoral inspirations which he loosens.
Then which light brings this opus ? Indeed, by contemplating this black and white photo of sunflowers faded on the cover, the despair and the melancholy would be necessary. And nevertheless, this album is quite different. From the first second, my heart capsized for the album, which is an ode to the magic and the sensualism. "Anastasis" finds completely its place and expresses even better the unique, deep and subtle links, weaved by these two old friends. These two multi-instrumentalists accompany their voices within the restless and bright tones, of guitar, percussions, synthesizer among others.
From the first sounds of The children of the sun, interpreted by Brendan Perry, the shivers invade me, letting then my powerless soul escape at the rate of their artistic creation. This one speaks to us about the human evolution, about how our genetic code depends on our ancient memory, it evokes our mother-nature : « We are ancient, Have ancient have the sun, We is on drugs from the ocean, Ounce our ancestral home, So that one day, We could all return To our birthlight, The great celestial dome... ». Would it be Power Flower of former days there ? Floating between the reality and the imagination, the dumping in their world is total. Let your hearts be submerged by this heat, be allowed transport as I am in this timeless journey. Because, dearest readers, you who read these few lines, consider good that my poor body remained motionless, whereas my soul wanders in the course of the delicious notes of Anabasis. This title, so well interpreted by Lisa Gerrard, is so sensually blown that I fell like floating between heaven and earth. See and leave these notes and this oriental atmosphere penetrate into your spirits, completely. Do you hear the hang, this musical instrument which looks like a steel drum, a kind of metallic sphere ?
It's the same for this fascinating composition whom is Agape, quite oriental and also sung by Lisa. This hypnotic voice accompanied with violins, tones and which get me a soft drunkenness is an indisputable ecstasy. Quite as these tribal singings on The return of the She-King moreover. Feel this melancholy and this freedom sink into your veins due to its singings of muse, outstandingly powerful and charming. Do you perceive the bewitching sound of this bagpipe, making us dream about distant parts of the country, any Highlands ?
Continuing to be rocked, Amnesia is linked, inciting us to understand that our memory, even older, is vital and that they allow us to move forward without redoing the same errors. « ...We live in the dreamtime, Nothing seems to last, Can you really plan a future When you no longer have a past... », « ... Memory, help me see, Amnesia, Memory, set me free… ». Opium, my favourite with Amnesia follows then. They are at the same time generous and deep in emotion due to the so penetrating and pleasant voice of Brendan Perry. Imagine to which point, during the listening of these Asian tones of Opium, these stringed instruments and the daf, this Iranian drum which David Kuckhermann (Berlin percussionist) plays magnificently, bewitched my spirit. Hear these words of hope : « I feel like I want to live... », « I feel like I want to fly... », « I feel the ocean in my blood... ». This incredible wealth causes such a strength in me as I fly away, believing to have touched the vault of heavern. Hearing the Brendan Perry's barbiturate voice, the highlight is brilliant ; quite as Kiko, whose instrumental final is fascinating. Using the bouzouki on the latter, a Greek instrument who looks like a lute, these harmonies create a dark and masterful progress. It is so breathtaking…
