Nous voici arrivés au 3^ème chapitre de notre périple cradelien : "Londres, tout le monde descend !". Moi et ma Fée de Sang faisons donc la route pour arriver dans la patrie de nos précieux Cradle of Filth, ce qui constituait la toute première fois pour chacun de nous deux. Je frissonnais déjà à l’idée de voir le groupe à domicile, d’autant plus qu’il s’agissait de la dernière date de cette tournée européenne (en omettant les quelques festivals estivaux de 2013).

Rotting London ?

Arrivés quelque peu en retard pour des motifs indépendants de notre volonté, nous arrivâmes ma Fée de Sang et moi-même en plein milieu du show de Rotting Christ. Présentant une set-list assez éclectique, aussi bien d’anciens que de nouveaux titres furent joués, le tout dans une interprétation convaincue mais pas convaincante… je m’explique.

Même si l’on sentait un groupe assurant le show, je ne fus pas touché par ce concert, notamment les titres les plus heavy et mélodiques. Ce n’est pas la première fois que je vois le groupe en live, et mon ressenti fut à peu près le même pour ce concert londonien.

Toutefois, je fus interpellé par de vieux titres du groupe, à l’atmosphère diabolique. En guise d’illustration, je vous présente cet extrait du tout premier album du groupe "The mighty contract" Voici The sign of Evil existence :

Comme vous pouvez l’entendre, ce titre montre bien que Rotting Christ sait encore faire preuve de virulence quand il le décide !

Ad Majorem London Gloriam

Le climat changea lorsque les Norvégiens de God Seed s’accaparèrent la scène. Comme pour tous les concerts de cette tournée, c’est dans la pénombre que Sign of an open eye délivra son lent poison, avec un Gaahl rampant :

L’ambiance installée, ce concert se déroula de manière équivalente à celui de la veille à Charleroi, avec un son malgré tout plus puissant. Devant une audience particulièrement réceptive, God Seed offrit une prestation vraiment intrigante et faisant preuve d’une réelle profondeur. D’ailleurs, je constate que plus j’assistais à un concert du groupe, et plus j’en appréciais le contenu. Je n’aurai pas cru une telle chose avant cette tournée !

Ce concert se termina comme à l’accoutumée par le classique This from the past : 

Je me répète par rapport à mes deux précédents live-reports, mais je vous conseille réellement d’expérimenter God Seed en live, car les ambiances studio prennent véritablement une toute autre dimension sur scène.

Et comme le pense mon compère Bloodhound (en lien avec la prestation estivale du groupe au Graspop Metal Meeting), l’avenir de God Seed viendra nourrir le black métal norvégien avec sa patte toute particulière…

From the Cradle to London…

Vous l’aurez déjà bien compris, l’objectif ultime de cette soirée était bel et bien de revoir les cultissimes Cradle of Filth, pour cette occasion très spéciale. Car contempler nos chers vampires à domicile, dans leur berceau même… quel cruel délice !

Plus de seize ans après l’émergence de ce rêve aux relents cauchemardesques, me voici enfin dans cette large salle du Forum pour le réaliser comme il se doit. Au loin résonne déjà Tiffauges…

Comme il fut prévisible, la set-list fut identique à celle de la veille à Charleroi. Mais quel plaisir que d’entendre ce panorama d’odes à la perversion délicate et subtile ! Pour ma part, je pourrais m’y plonger indéfiniment sans la moindre lassitude… A ce titre, voici le direct mais élaboré Lilith Immaculate :

Le point qu’il demeure intéressant de relever, c’est bel et bien l’interprétation du groupe. En effet, nous y avons senti une volonté de demeurer le plus précis possible en termes d’exécution. Il sembla que le groupe s’était mis une pression particulière, comme si la moindre fausse note se trouvait proscrite devant ce parterre familier.

Epuisés, il fallut bien garder une précieuse énergie pour le second chapitre du show, que nous vous offrons ici en intégralité !

Comme la veille à Charleroi, The abhorrent l’introduisit avec rage et destructivité. A vrai dire, l’impact fut encore plus intense qu’à Charleroi, dans une interprétation bien moins instinctive :

Attendue et pourtant immortelle, ce fut une fois de plus un énorme moment que Cruelty brought thee orchids. Symphonique et excessive, l’interprétation fut époustouflante à tous niveaux, réussissant à nouveau l’exploit de nous faire régresser en 1998 :



La brume londonienne n’a pas d’équivalent au monde, et cette soirée du 19 décembre 2012 ne viendra pas l’infirmer : Her ghost in the fog. Brillamment puissante, ce fut un sublime violet qui vint parsemer nos âmes :



Non sans une certaine pointe de tristesse, il s’agit du dernier morceau de la dernière date de cette tournée Creatures from the Black Abyss que nous nous apprêtions à introjecter. Et bien entendu,  From the Cradle to enslave clôtura ce sacre scénique avec forces conviction et ferveur :

Même si toutes les strates instrumentales furent exquises, les vocaux et la batterie furent particulièrement mis en valeur. Et ce sont sur ces deux points particuliers que j’ai le plus perçu cette méticulosité dans l’exécution de Cradle of Filth. Mais comme à leur habitude, tous les artistes furent brillants, personne ne pouvant venir me contredire sur un tel constat.

Je dois avouer avoir une sensible préférence pour le concert de la veille à Charleroi, ce qui fut notamment dû aux conditions idéales de son et de lumière offertes par le Coliséum. Et le Forum n’aura pas su rivaliser, même si par ailleurs cette salle n’en reste pas moins de grande qualité.

De manière plus globale, cette tournée européenne fut un plein succès, nous montrant un Cradle of Filth en excellente forme et prêt à conquérir le monde. Par contraste avec ceux déclarant que le groupe se trouvait de retour, je considère que Cradle of Filth fut très rarement en perte de vitesse (et leurs prestations de 2011 en sont la meilleure preuve), mais il est vrai que 2012 demeure un excellent cru, rouge-rubis qui plus est…

4. Histoire d’un périple (troisième partie)…

Une fois de plus, il s’agissait d’un périple, avec ici de nouvelles embûches ! Car soyons honnêtes, Londres nous est quelque peu apparu comme un terrain hostile, où les Français que nous sommes ne sont manifestement pas la bienvenue. A vrai dire, nous sommes aux antipodes par exemple du peuple norvégien, ce dernier signifiant sa joie de recevoir des personnes issues d’autres contrées. Mais les Anglais n’ont pas exprimé une telle satisfaction, bien au contraire devrais-je dire (la meilleure preuve en fut la moquerie pure et simple dont nous avons été l’objet à l’hôtel situé non loin du Forum). Ajoutons à cela la difficulté majeure de circuler à Londres (sans oublier la maudite conduite à gauche !).

Une fois de plus, Cradle of Filth est la plus intense des motivations pour se déplacer en terre hostile, pour la rendre sanglante et donc familière. Bien entendu, on nous y reprendra, en moutons noirs que nous sommes…

A quand la prochaine dépravation cradelienne dans la brume londonienne ?

Here we are at the third chapter of our filthy journey : “London, last stop, all change !”. Myself and my Fairy of Blood have traveled headed for the motherland of our precious Cradle of Filth, which was the very first time for both of us. I already shivered thinking to see the band in his own country, especially as it was the very last date of this European tour (without the few summer festivals of 2013).

Rotting London ?

We arrived late for reasons beyond our control, and we came in the middle of the Rotting Christ show. With an eclectic set list, both old and new tracks were played, with a convinced performance but not convincing… I must explain myself.

Even if we felt a band that did the job, I wasn’t moved by this show, in particular for the melodic and heavy songs. This isn’t the first time I see the band live on stage, and the way I felt it was pretty much the same for this London show.

However, I was called to mind by old tracks of the band, with a diabolical atmosphere. By way of illustration, I present you this extract from the very album of the band, "The mighty contract". Here is The sign of Evil existence :

As you can hear, this tracks shows pretty well that Rotting Christ knows how to be virulent when he decides it !

Ad Majorem London Gloriam

The atmosphere changed when the Norwegian people from God Seed came on stage. As for all the shows from this tour, in absolute darkness Sign of an open eye released its poison, with a creeping Gaahl :

The atmosphere established, the show took place pretty much in the same way as the one the day before in Charleroi, with a more powerful sound. In front of a receptive audience, God Seed offered an intrigued performance with real depths. Furthermore, I must recognize that the more I see band live onstage the more I like it. I couldn’t believe such thing before this tour !

The show ended as always with the classic This from the past :

Maybe I repeat myself in regard of my two previous reports, but you should experiment God Seed live, because the studio atmospheres take a whole new dimension on stage.

And as my buddy Bloodhound thinks (in regard of the performance of the band at Graspop Metal Meeting), the future of God Seed will feed Norwegian black metal with its particular style…

From the Cradle to London…

As you’ve already understood, the final goal of that night was to see once again the cult Cradle of Filth, for this very special occasion. Because contemplate our dear vampires at home, in their own cradle… what a cruel delight !

More than sixteen years after the birth of this dream with its nightmarish lingering odour, here I am in this place of the Forum to realize it as it must be. Far away already resonates Tiffauges…

It was predictable that the set list was pretty much the same as the day before in Charleroi. But what a pleasure to hear this overview of odes to delicate and subtle perversion ! According to me, I could dive into it until the end of time without any tiredness… In fact, here is the direct but still elaborate Lilith Immaculate :

What is interesting to lift up is the performance of the b              and. Indeed, we felt a real desire to stay the more precise possible at a technical level. It seems that the band has put itself under pressure, and any wrong chord was banned in front of this familiar audience.

Exhausted, we had to keep a precious energy for the second chapter of the show, which is offered to you in its wholeness !

Like the day before in Charleroi, The abhorrent introduced it with rage and destructiveness. In fact, the effect was much more intense than in Charleroi, with a lesser instinctive performance :

Expected but still immortal, Cruelty brought thee orchids was once more a huge moment. Symphonic and immoderate, the performance was stunning at all levels, succeeding once again in getting us back in 1998 :




The London fog is unique, and that night of the 19 of December 2012 couldn’t deny it : Her ghost in the fog. Incredibly powerful, a beautiful purple came to sprinkle our souls :




Not without some sadness, it was the last track from the last show of this Creatures from the Black Abyss tour which we were ready to introject. And of course, From the Cradle to enslave enclosed this scenic consecration with lots of conviction and fervour :

Even if all instrumental stratums were divine, vocals and drums were pretty highlighted. And this is on those two particular points where I saw a lot of meticulousness for this performance of Cradle of Filth. But as always, all the artists were brilliant, and no one can contradict me on such point of view.

I must admit that I had a little preference for the show in Charleroi the day before, which was caused by ideal conditions of sound and lightning inside the Coliseum. And the Forum couldn’t compete with it, even if this last one possesses a high quality too.

In a more global view, this European tour was a total success, showing us a band in excellent shape and ready to conquer the whole world. For those who always say that Cradle of Filth was back on this tour, I consider that the band was rarely losing its speed in fact (and their performances from 2011 reveals it), but it’s true that 2012 stays an excellent vintage, ruby red in fact…

4. The story of a journey (third part) …

Once more, it was a real trek, with some new pitfalls ! To be honest, London appeared as a hostile ground, where French people didn’t seem to be welcomed. To tell the truth, it is the exact opposite of Norwegian people, glad to meet foreign persons. But the English ones didn’t express such satisfaction. We must add to this the hurdles to run in the city (and I don’t forget the damned left-hand drive !).

Once again, Cradle of Filth was the more intense motivation to travel to a hostile ground, to get it back bloody and familiar. Of course, we’ll do it again, as the black sheep that we are…

When will happen the next filthy depravity in the London fog ?
