Juste avant leur concert parisien, nous avons eu le plaisir de rencontrer Liv Kristine Espenæs Krull, Kari Rueslåtten et Anneke Van Giersbergen, réunies pour former The Sirens. Pour ceux qui auraient passé les deux dernières décennies sur une autre planète, voici un bref rappel des carrières respectives de ces femmes aussi talentueuses qu'adorables…

Liv Kristine est une chanteuse et auteure-compositrice norvégienne. Elle fut la voix féminine de Theatre of Tragedy de 1994 à 2003, initiant le genre vocal dit de « la Belle et la Bête ». En 1998, elle a sorti son premier album solo, et depuis 2003 elle est la chanteuse du groupe Leaves' Eyes. Au fil des années, elle a collaboré avec divers groupes comme Atrocity, le groupe de son mari (Alexander Krull), Cradle of Filth ou Týr.

Kari Rueslåtten est une chanteuse, auteure-compositrice et claviériste norvégienne. Elle est entrée dans l'histoire lorsqu'elle a rejoint The 3^rd and the Mortal (1992-1994), devenant ainsi la première chanteuse unique d'un groupe de métal, et inspirant des artistes tels qu’Anneke Van Giersbergen, Liv Kristine ou Tuomas Holopainen (claviériste et fondateur de Nightwish). Après l'enregistrement d'un album avec Storm en 1995, elle a opté pour une carrière solo, explorant de nouveaux sons et styles musicaux dans ses albums.

Anneke Van Giersbergen est une chanteuse, auteure-compositrice et guitariste néerlandaise. Elle devint célèbre en tant que chanteuse de The Gathering, de 1995 à 2007. Elle a ensuite embrassé une florissante carrière en solo, tout en collaborant avec de nombreux artistes et groupes, parmi lesquels Anathema, Devin Townsend, Arjen Lucassen, etc.

Lors d'un entretien rapide mais fort chaleureux, nous avons tenté d'en apprendre un peu plus sur les dessous de leur nouveau projet commun…

Chryseia : Anneke, Kari, Liv, vous avez uni vos forces dans un projet live, The Sirens. Il est original dans la mesure où les collaborations féminines restent assez rares dans l'univers du métal. Pourriez-vous nous dire comment tout a commencé ?

Anneke Van Giersbergen : J'ai pris contact avec Kari en 2013 pour un projet de duo que j'avais pour mon album solo, "Drive". Puis Liv et moi, nous nous sommes rencontrées lors d'un festival [Masters of Rock, juillet 2013]. Nous nous connaissons depuis tellement longtemps… Nous avons pris une photo ensemble, et tout le monde a beaucoup aimé cette photo ; alors nous avons pensé que nous pourrions faire quelque chose ensemble, que ça pourrait être chouette. Plus tard, nous nous sommes dit que ce serait vraiment cool si nous étions un trio, trois femmes, et si nous créions The Sirens pour célébrer notre passé et notre présent au sein de groupes de métal menés par une chanteuse. Alors, nous avons fait venir Kari à nos côtés, et voilà !

Chryseia : Parlons du nom que vous avez choisi pour ce projet. Les sirènes sont des créatures enchanteresses, mais elles constituent également une menace pour les hommes, elles les mènent au trépas. Pensez-vous que, à vos débuts, vous étiez considérées comme menaçantes vis-à-vis des hommes, notamment parce que les chanteurs et les groupes n'étaient pas forcément enchantés de voir débarquer des chanteuses ?

Kari Rueslåtten : Je me souviens parfaitement de la première fois que je suis montée sur scène, pour un concert de The 3^rd and the Mortal. Tout le monde attendait le chanteur, et je me disais « Eh bien, c'est moi, c'est tout ce que vous aurez ! ». Les choses étaient différentes à l'époque. Habituellement, le chanteur avait une choriste. De ce point de vue, je crois que toutes les trois, nous avons été les premières [chanteuses uniques]. De nos jours, les gens n'y pensent même plus, mais à l'époque, c'était tout bonnement impensable !

Chryseia : Venons-en maintenant à la set-list des concerts des Sirens. Vous jouez des titres de The 3^rd and the Mortal, Theatre of Tragedy et The Gathering, ainsi que des morceaux de vos carrières solo. Comment le choix s'est-il fait ? Est-ce que chacune d'entre vous a dit ce qu'elle voulait chanter, ou en avez-vous décidé en commun ?

Liv Kristine : Un peu des deux, en fait. Chacune a choisi ses perles ; puis dans un second temps, nous avons réfléchi à la façon d'ajouter nos propres chansons et personnalités aux Sirens pour coller au concept, satisfaire à l'esprit qui est celui des Sirens. Nous avons fait du bon boulot, me semble-t-il. L'avantage, c'est que le groupe a répété toutes nos chansons à nous trois avant que nous, chanteuses, nous ne nous retrouvions pour répéter. Nous avons été les dernières à nous y mettre, de sorte que le groupe avait déjà pu vérifier que tout cela fonctionnait bien. S'il y avait des ajustements à suggérer, ils l'avaient fait pendant les répétitions, de telle manière que lorsque nous nous sommes tous réunis chez Anneke pour les répétitions, la base était déjà bien établie, et nous savions que c'était bien comme cela.

Chryseia : Deux chansons, Sisters of the Earth et Embracing the Seasons, ont été composées pour The Sirens. Une troisième doit sortir très bientôt [ce troisième titre, Fearless, a été présenté en février 2015]. En avez-vous chacune écrit une ? Ou bien avez-vous travaillé ensemble sur ces titres ?

Anneke Van Giersbergen : Chaque chanson vient de l'une d'entre nous, chacune a composé un titre, si bien que nous en avons trois maintenant. C'était plus simple ainsi, parce que nous vivons dans des pays différents et qu'il est compliqué de se retrouver pour composer. Mais, bien sûr, nous les chantons ensemble, toutes les trois, de telle sorte qu'elles forment un ensemble : nos voix ajoutent une certaine atmosphère et ça les relie, même si elles sont très différentes en soi. Je pense que ces trois chansons produisent un mélange intéressant.

Chryseia : La tournée semble remporter un beau succès, vous avez récemment ajouté des dates en Amérique latine et un concert en Roumanie en juin. Est-ce que tout cela va mener à la réalisation d'un album studio, ou est-ce que vous préférez que ça reste une expérience live ?

Kari Rueslåtten : The Sirens est un concept live. C'est fondamentalement la raison pour laquelle nous le faisons, c'est amusant, c'est sympa. Nous n'avons pas l'intention d'enregistrer un disque. Nous allons simplement faire les concerts et voir où ça nous mène.

Anneke Van Giersbergen : Oui, et les gens doivent venir aux concerts, y assister. Je crois que c'est une bonne chose : si vous voulez voir The Sirens, il faut aller aux concerts. Vous savez, avec YouTube et tout ça, les gens réclament un DVD, mais ça coûte si cher à faire…

Liv Kristine : D'autant qu'il n'y a pas de label derrière tout cela, pas d'investissement extérieur.

Chryseia : Pour conclure cet entretien, souhaitez-vous dire quelques mots sur vos autres projets, concernant vos carrières solo ? Que peut-on attendre ?

Liv Kristine : Je viens de sortir un album, le cinquième de ma carrière solo, intitulé "Vervain". J'ai eu la chance de pouvoir mettre deux de ses titres dans la set-list des Sirens, parce que ces deux projets ont grandi de concert : je suis ici, bien sûr, pour être un tiers du trio des Sirens, mais également pour montrer un aperçu de mon travail au cours des vingt dernières années. C'est magique ! Pour le public, tout cela, c'est un voyage dans l'histoire, notre histoire à toutes les trois. Ajouter l'épice personnel est, à mon avis, un des éléments qui rend The Sirens magique, extraordinaire, unique en son genre.

Kari Rueslåtten : J'ai moi aussi sorti un cinquième album cette année, "Time to Tell". Il est plus acoustique, mais nous jouons malgré tout quelques unes des chansons avec les Sirens. En fait, cela crée une bonne dynamique pendant les concerts, de chanter avec juste le violoncelle, le piano… Ça fonctionne. Et l'an prochain, je vais sortir une suite à cet album.

Anneke Van Giersbergen : Je participe en ce moment à un projet nommé The Gentle Storm, avec Arjen Lucassen, d'Ayreon. Toute mon attention est concentrée là-dessus. Nous avons terminé un album qui va sortir en mars, puis nous allons faire une tournée. C'est un double album, alors c'est énorme. Il y a une face très heavy, tandis que l'autre est plus douce et folk. Le tout est très beau et mélodieux, et j'ai hâte qu'il sorte.

Les Sirens n'ont pas fini de nous enchanter : leur tournée se poursuit, et comme l'a dit Liv Kristine à la fin du concert parisien, elles reviendront très probablement en France !

The state of grace… to the power of three

Just before their Parisian show, we had the pleasure to meet Liv Kristine Espenæs Krull, Kari Rueslåtten and Anneke Van Giersbergen, who joined their forces to form The Sirens.

For those who may have lived on another planet for the last two decades, here is a quick reminder of the respective careers of those extremely talented and equally adorable ladies.

Liv Kristine is a Norwegian singer and song-writer. She was the female vocalist of Theatre of Tragedy from 1994 to 2003, pioneering what's usually known as the “Beauty and the Beast” vocal style. In 1998, she released her first solo album, and since 2003 she's the vocalist of Leaves' Eyes. Through the years, she collaborated with various bands such as Atrocity, her husband's band (Alexander Krull), Cradle of Filth or Týr.

Kari Rueslåtten is a Norwegian singer, song-writer and keyboardist. She made history when she joined The 3^rd and the Mortal (1992-1994), thus becoming the first lead female singer in the metal scene, and inspiring artists such as Anneke Van Giersbergen, Liv Kristine, and Tuomas Holopainen (keyboardist and founder of Nightwish). After she recorded an album with Storm in 1995, she chose in favour of a solo career, experimenting new sounds and music styles in her albums.

Anneke Van Giersbergen is a Dutch singer, song-writer and guitarist. She became famous as lead singer of The Gathering, from 1995 to 2007. Then she embraced a successful solo career, and collaborated with many artists and bands such as Anathema, Devin Townsend, Arjen Lucassen, etc.

We took the opportunity of a quick but friendly interview to learn more about the hidden sides of their new common project…

Chryseia : Anneke, Kari, Liv, you joined forces into this live band and project, The Sirens. It's an original project since there aren't so many ladies' collaborations in the metal scene. Could you tell us how it all began ?

Anneke Van Giersbergen : I approached Kari in 2013 for a project of a duet for my solo album, "Drive". Then, Liv and I met on a festival [Masters of Rock, July 2013]. We've known each other for so long… We made a picture together, and everybody really liked this picture ; so we thought “We might do something together, maybe that would be cool”. Later on, we thought it would be really cool if we had a trio, three ladies, and make The Sirens to celebrate our past and present as female fronted bands. So we got Kari in the group, and here we are !

Chryseia : Let's talk about the name you chose for the project. Sirens are enchanting creatures, but they are also a threat for men, they lure them to their death. Do you think that, at the beginning, you were considered as threats for men, because, maybe, male singers and bands were not that thrilled to see female vocalists ?

Kari Rueslåtten : I remember very well the first time I got on stage, for a 3^rd and the Mortal concert. Everybody was waiting for the vocalist, you know, and I was like “Well, it's me, that's all you're going to get”. It was different, back then. Usually, the male vocalist would have a female side-vocalist. I think in that respect all three of us were like the first. Nowadays, people don't think about it, but it was very unthinkable at the time !

Chryseia : Now, let's talk about the setlist for the Sirens shows. You're playing songs from The 3^rd and the Mortal, Theatre of Tragedy, and The Gathering, as well as songs from your solo careers. How did you pick them ? Did each of you say what she wanted to sing or was it a common decision ?

Liv Kristine : It's a mixture, actually. We personally pick our pearls, and then secondly we thought about how to add our own songs and personality to the Sirens to fulfill the concept, the spirit of what The Sirens is about. I think we did a good job. The good thing is the band rehearsed all the songs of the three of us before we singers met for rehearsals. We were the last ones to get onto the whole thing, so the band already got the feeling that it was alright altogether, and if there were any adjustments to suggest, they did it during the rehearsals, so that when we came and met at Anneke's place to rehearse, the basis was settled, and we knew that it was the right way to go.

Chryseia : Two songs, Sisters of the Earth and Embracing the Seasons, were written especially for The Sirens, and a third one is to be released very soon [this third song, Fearless, was released in February 2015]. Did each of you write one ? Or did you work together on them ?

Anneke Van Giersbergen : Each song came from one of us, everybody initiated one song, so we have three songs now. It's the easy way to do it, since we all live in different countries. It's difficult to come together to make a song. But, of course, we're singing them together, all the three of us, so these songs really fit together because our voices just add a certain atmosphere to them, and that connects the three songs, although they are very different in character. I think it's an interesting mix, with those three songs.

Chryseia : The tour seems to be a success, you've recently added shows in Latin America and a gig in Romania in June. Will all this lead to a studio album, or would you rather keep it on stage ?

Kari Rueslåtten : Well, The Sirens is a live concept. Basically, that's why we're doing it, it's fun, it's a nice thing to do. We don't have plans to make a record. So we'll just do the shows and see where that leads us.

Anneke Van Giersbergen : Yes, people have to come to the show, to see it. I think it's a good thing, that if you want to see it, you have to come. And you know, with YouTube and everything, people ask a lot about DVD, but they are so expensive to make…

Liv Kristine : Yes, there is no record label behind this, this is all off investment.

Chryseia : To conclude this interview, would you like to say a few words about your other projects, regarding your solo careers ? What can we expect ?

Liv Kristine : I've just released a solo album, the fifth one in my career, and it's called "Vervain". I was lucky enough to put two of the tracks in the Sirens setlist, because they came hand in hand : I'm here, of course, to be one third of the trio of The Sirens, but I'm also able to show one side of my work throughout 20 years, so it's magic. For the audience, this whole thing is a journey through history, the history of the three of us. To add the solo spice is one part which, I think, makes The Sirens kind of magic, outstanding, and one of its kind.

Kari Rueslåtten : I also have a fifth album out this year, "Time to Tell". It's a more acoustic album, but we still do some of the songs on the Sirens setlist, and it actually makes quite a nice dynamic in the concerts, singing with just the cello, the piano… It works. And next year, I'm going to do a follow-up album for this one.

Anneke Van Giersbergen : I'm in a project called The Gentle Storm with Arjen Lucassen, from Ayreon. My focus is on that : we finished an album we're releasing in March, and then we're going on tour with it. It's a double album, so it's a huge thing. The one side is super heavy, while the other is very soft and folky. That's all very melodic and beautiful, and I'm looking forward to that.

The Sirens aren't done with their magic. The tour is still on and as Liv Kristine put it at the end of the Parisian show, they may come back to France !
