A l'occasion de leur tournée européenne avec Wintersun et Arch Enemy, les Suédois de Tribulation ont pu présenter leur nouvel album "Down Below" au Bikini le 22 janvier 2018, près de Toulouse. Comment s'est débrouillé le combo devant un public pas nécessairement friand des influences très 70's ?

Inquisitor : Merci encore pour l'interview, c'est très gentil de ta part. Donc, première question : comment se passe la tournée jusqu’à présent ?

Oscar : Que dire ? Du point de vue des concerts, c’est vraiment bien.

Adam : On joue devant pas mal de gens qui ne nous ont jamais vus auparavant. Tout se déroule selon le plan.

Oscar : Oui, au niveau des concerts. Car nous avons eu une gastro-entérite et j’ai eu des problèmes de dos la semaine dernière. Nous avons eu quelques soucis.

Adam : Beaucoup de merdes que j'espère vous n'avez pas remarqué quand nous étions sur scène.

Inquisitor : Comment Tribulation trouve-t-il sa place parmi tous ces groupes si modernes ? Qu’est-ce que le public vous fait ressentir quand vous êtes sur scène ?

Adam : C'est un mélange étrange, mais nous le voyons comme une chose positive. C’est quelque chose pour chacun. Nous avons joué avec beaucoup de groupes très étrangement différents. Cannibal Corpse, Deafheaven, Youth Code... Ce n'est pas nouveau pour nous. Ce que nous voyons de l’audience c’est que nous les conquérons la plupart du temps, je pense.

Oscar : Oui, le fait que nous jouons un style de métal différent aide beaucoup. Et je pense que c'est nécessaire, parce que nous sommes, je le crois, plus organiques. Les chansons sont en général plus lentes, et il y a plus de dynamisme dans notre musique.

Inquisitor : Pourquoi avoir choisi Lady Death, Nightbound et The Lament pour représenter "Down Below" durant cette tournée ?

Oscar : Et bien, surtout parce que nous les voyons comme des singles. C'est un public nouveau pour nous et il est donc important de coller au message que nous voulons délivrer aux gens. (NDLR : Le nouvel album n'était pas encore sorti le jour de l'interview)

Adam : Des gens ont entendu les chansons sur Spotify ou Youtube, et c'est plutôt une bonne chose. Et pour Nightbound, on l'a choisie uniquement parce qu’on l’aime.

Inquisitor : "The Horror" est désormais absent de votre set-list. Est-ce à cause de la durée du concert, ou vous sentez que l'album ne représente plus Tribulation ?

Adam : Nous n'arrêterons pas de jouer des chansons de "The Horror". Tu fais une nouvelle set-list pour chaque concert, chaque tournée, et cette fois nous voulions jouer des chansons de "The Children of the Night" et autant de nouvelles que possible, ce qui ne laisse plus beaucoup de place pour le reste.

Inquisitor : Donc si vous avez un temps de jeu d'une heure – peut-être lors d'une tournée en tête d'affiche – il y aura de nouveau des titres issus de "The Horror" ?

Adam : Oui, sûrement.

Inquisitor : Le récent changement de line-up a-t-il affecté l'écriture ou l'enregistrement du nouvel album ?

Adam : Oui, en effet. Premièrement, il a été retardé, on a dû commencer l'enregistrement plus tard que ce qu’on voulait. Et Oscar a participé à l'écriture également. De nouvelles choses, et une nouvelle personne.

Oscar : Et puis, à propos de la manière dont l'album a été écrit, il a y des différences entre comment il était et comme il est maintenant.

Adam : Oui, surtout à cause des délais. On a dû se dépêcher. Mais puisque Oscar connait Logic Pro (NDLR : Logiciel d'enregistrement et de mix audio), on a gagné pas mal de temps. C'était une bénédiction, ça a permis de vraiment accélérer le processus.

Oscar : Et ça a été une excellente chose pour moi de rencontrer Adam en tant que musicien. J'ai rejoint le groupe grâce à lui, et maintenant j'en fais partie mais surtout j'en suis aussi un très grand fan. C'est incroyable. On a eu la chance de se connaître grâce à tout le travail qu'on a réalisé. Maintenant je me sens comme un membre à part entière de Tribulation.

Inquisitor : Je décrirais votre musique comme étant du « Vampire metal ». Comment vous en parleriez ?

Adam : Du heavy metal ? Je dirais qu'on joue du metal extrême, c’est ce qu’il faut retenir.

Oscar : Du metal psychédélique.

Adam : Ouais, exactement ! Hier, c'était la seule description écrite pour nous sur un flyer : « Metal psychédélique ». D'une certaine façon, ça colle plutôt bien. Pas pour toutes les chansons, mais c’est définitivement ça. On est parfois catalogués comme un groupe de Doom, mais je n'ai jamais vraiment écouté de groupes de Doom.

Inquisitor : Avez-vous envisagé de jouer avec un claviériste sur scène ?

Adam : Oui, à vrai dire on a déjà eu un clavier avec nous sur scène. Lors des derniers concerts qu’on a faits pour "The Children of the Night", à Göteborg et Stockholm, nous avions une organiste fantastique qui s’appelle Sofia et qui jouait dans un groupe qui n'existe plus maintenant. On n'avait donc pas besoin de backing tracks pour les parties d'orgue et de piano. Et c'est quelque chose qu'on refera probablement.

Inquisitor : Avez-vous une idée de comment Tribulation sonnera à l'avenir ? Peut-être avec du chant clair ?

Adam : Non, je ne sais pas. On laissera l'inspiration venir. Désolé, je ne peux pas répondre à cette question !

Inquisitor : Avec quels artistes vous aimeriez tourner ? Le line-up parfait.

Adam : Doivent-ils exister ? (Rires)

Oscar : Peut-être Morbid Angel et...

Adam : Fields of the Nephilim, peut-être. Et Mortuary Drape, bien sûr. Secrets of the Moon colleraient très bien, on a pensé à eux.

Inquisitor : Votre musique a beaucoup de sonorités rétro. Y a-t-il un album sorti après 2010 qui vous inspire vraiment ?

Adam : J'ai beaucoup, beaucoup aimé l'album "Hero" de Bölzer. C'était une brise rafraîchissante au beau milieu d'une scène plutôt stagnante, je trouve. Définitivement celui-là, selon moi.

Oscar : D'une branche assez différente du metal, je dirais... Queen of the Stone Age ? Ils ont fait de très bons albums. Je ne parle pas du dernier, mais celui juste avant était génial. Il y a aussi un artiste suédois qui s’appelle Tonbruket qui est vraiment excellent, et je crois que ça l’est pour moi !

Inquisitor : Je suis à court de questions pour ce soir. Merci beaucoup encore une fois pour cette interview, et pour l'incroyable performance plus tôt sur scène.

Adam : Je t’en prie, j'espère qu'on pourra bientôt revenir en France.

On the occasion of their European tour with Wintersun and Arch Enemy, Swedish people from Tribulation presented their new album "Down Below" at the Bikini on the 22th of January 2018, near Toulouse. How the band got through in front of an audience not necessarily lover of 70’ influences?

Inquisitor: Thanks again for the interview, it's really kind from you. So, first question: how is the tour going so far?

Oscar: What can I say? Concert wise, it's really good.

Adam: We're playing in front of a lot of people that have never seen us before. Everything is going according to the plan.

Oscar: Yeah, concert wise. Because we had stomach flu and I had problems with my back last week though. We had some trouble.

Adam: A lot of crap that you don't really notice, hopefully, on stage.

Inquisitor: How does Tribulation fit with all those modern-sounding bands? How the audience makes you feel when you're on stage?

Adam: It's a weird mix, but we see it a positive thing. It's something for everyone. We've been playing with a lot of weirdly mixed bands. Deafheaven, Cannibal Corpse, Youth Code... This is not a new thing for us. What we see from the audience is that we win them over most of the time, I think.

Oscar: Yes, the fact that we're playing a different kind of style of metal helps a lot. And I think it's needed, because we are more, I believe, organic. Songs are generally slower, there is more dynamic into our music.

Inquisitor: Why did you choose Lady Death, Nightbound and The Lament to represent "Down Below" on this tour?

Oscar: Well, really because we see them as singles. It's a new audience for us so it's important we stick to the message we want to show to people.

Adam: Some people have heard the songs on Spotify or Youtube, and that's hopefully a good thing. And Nightbound, we choose it just because we like the song.

Inquisitor: There is no more "The Horror" song in the set list now. Is it because of your playtime, or because you don't think that the album represent Tribulation anymore?

Adam: We won't stop playing songs from "The Horror". You make a new set list sometimes for each show, each tour, and this time we wanted to play songs from "The Children of the Night" and as many new songs as we could fit, and it doesn't leave much room.

Inquisitor: So if you can play one hour maybe for a headlining tour, there will be some "The Horror" songs?

Adam: Yes, most likely.

Inquisitor: Did the recent lineup changes affect the recording or the writing of the new album?

Adam: Yeah, it did. First of all, it got postponed, we had to start later than we wanted to. And Oscar contributed to the songs as well. New things, and a new person.

Oscar: Also, about the way the album was written, there are differences between how it was back then, and how it is now.

Adam: Yes, because of the time, mostly. We had to rush. But since Oscar knows Logic Pro, we saved a lot of time. That was a blessing, because it made things happen faster.

Oscar: And it was a very good thing for me that I got to know Adam as a musician. I joined the band thanks to him, and now I'm part of it, but I'm also a very big fan of it. It's amazing. We had the chance to get to know each other because of all the work we did. Now I feel like I'm entirely part of Tribulation.

Inquisitor: I'd personally describe your music as « Vampire metal ». How would you talk about it?

Adam: Heavy metal? I'd say that we play extreme metal, and that's the bottom line.

Oscar: Psychedelic metal.

Adam: Yeah, exactly! Yesterday, that was the only description written for us on a flyer: « Psychedelic metal ». Somehow, it does fit. Not for every song, but it's definitely there. I mean, we wrote so many different things... We're sometimes labeled as a Doom band, but I've never listened to any band of Doom.

Inquisitor: Have you ever considered getting a keyboard player on stage?

Adam: Yeah, actually we had a keyboard laying on stage. During the final shows we did for "The Children of the Night", in Gothenburg and Stockholm, we had a fantastic organist called Sofia who played with a band that doesn't exist anymore. So we didn't have to use backing tracks for the organ and piano parts. And it's something that we'll probably do again.

Inquisitor: Do you have any idea about how Tribulation may sound in the future? Maybe clean singing?

Adam: No, I don't know. We'll just let it flow. Sorry, I just can't answer to this question!

Inquisitor: Which artists would you like to tour with? The perfect line-up.

Adam: Do they have to exist? (Laughs)

Oscar: Maybe Morbid Angel and...

Adam: Fields of the Nephilim, possibly. And Mortuary Drape, of course. Secrets of the Moon would also fit very great, we thought about them.

Inquisitor: Your music has a very strong retro vibe. Is there any post-2010 album that really inspired you?

Adam: I really, really liked the Bölzer album "Hero". That was a fresh breeze in an otherwise quite stagnant scene, I think. Definitely that one, for me.

Oscar: From a kind of a different corner in metal, I would say... Queens of the Stone Age? They have great albums. Not the recent one, but the one before was amazing. There's also a Swedish artist called Tonbruket which is really amazing, and that's it for me!

Inquisitor: I'm out of questions for tonight. Thanks a lot for the interview, and for the outstanding performance.
