Le même logo. Noir sur un fond beige gravé d’une scène épique, ce guerrier nordique fou de rage brandissant son épée comme pour briser les nuages. Le Black Death de 1986 a évolué jusqu’à nos jours par quinze albums qui ne se ressembleront jamais. Darkthrone est l’un des groupes qui colle parfaitement à son histoire. Après collaborations, les hauts et les bas qu'on leur connait, Darkthrone et Peaceville Records sont toujours liés comme les doigts de la main dans un coffret de légende.
Leur musique se fait un peu plus « Black Thrash » depuis le début des années 2000 où cette évolution se fait lente et évidente. Avec le recul, la cohérence du titre de cet album "The Underground Resistance" est remarquable. Sans retracer les premiers pas de Bathory par exemple, qui a passé sa carrière à crier contre un thrash explosif et envahissant, on a retrouvé ça chez Darkthrone (sans doute de "A Blaze in the Northern Sky", "Under a Funeral Moon", "Transilvanian Hunger" jusqu’au "Ravishing Grimness" de 1999) qui dans un contexte qui leur est propre, évoluait de manière plus individuelle, c’était la guerre au détachement, être unique devenait l’Objectif. Il suffit de regarder Mayhem.
Reste que… le thrash est ce qu’il est, le Black Metal pareil mais je vais avouer que "The Underground Resistance" n’aura qu’un seul défaut, l’attente du prochain opus. Il y a tellement de choses dans cet album ! Thrash mes enfants ? Que nenni. Les influences sont extrêmement nombreuses et démarrent d’un Venom aux chants épiques d’un Bathory, quelques pointes vocales à la Storm ou Isengard, colorées de piques typiquement Thrash. Musicalement, on n’est pas sans retrouver et oui, les codes uniques du Black Metal (rien déjà que sur Dead Early). Richesse, profondeur sonore, effet Candlemassiens et Satyriconesques… et comment ne pas évoquer Celtic Frost et "Monotheist" (donc Tryptikon…) en écoutant Come Warfare, The Entire Doom. J’ai personnellement beaucoup aimé la pointe de nostalgie qui se dégage de Valkyrie et placé en seconde position, ce titre arrive comme pour nous dire que la page tournée un nouveau livre s’ouvre.
Le concept de folie guerrière de Bathory est apparent sur l’excellent Leave No Cross Unturned, un hymne délicieux encadré de ces fameux effets « guitaristiques » qui nous ramènent en aller simple vers le Black Metal. Exagération peut-être mais au fil des écoutes j’ai l’impression d’un album d’influences-souvenirs, à l’image d’un tas de photos.
Parfois même, ces deux lascars de Nocturno Culto et Fenriz attisent ma curiosité et mon admiration tant leur univers est hétérogène. Une maturité particulière forgée par le temps nous donne le plaisir d’écouter un groupe qui s’amuse comme un Cathedral, par exemple ("The Guessing Game"), ou d’un Sigh.
Les bleus, ceci est la leçon numéro un, comment être soi-même en exploitant des influences indéniables. L’excellence fait que "The Underground Resistance" est… sans explication rationnelle aucune, du Darkthrone à part entière.

The Black Death of 1986 has evolved to the present days by fifteen albums that do not resemble. Darkthrone is one group that fits perfectly with his history. After collaborations, the ups and downs that we all of us already know, Darkthrone and Peaceville Records are always linked as fingers in a box of legend.
Their music is a little more "Black Thrash" since the early 2000s ; this evolution progress is slow and obvious. With hindsight, the consistency of the title of this album “The Underground Resistance” is remarkable. No need to retrace first steps of Bathory for example, which has spent his career screaming against this explosive and pervasive thrash. It was found also in Darkthrone (of course, “A Blaze in the Northern Sky”, “Under a Funeral Moon”, ”Transylvanian Hunger” up ”Ravishing Grimness” of 1999…) that in the context of their own, more evolved individuals, it was the war of detachment, to become Unique was the target. Just look Mayhem.
Still ... thrash is what it is, like the Black Metal but I'll admit that “The Underground Resistance” will have only one default, waiting for the next one. There are so many things in this album ! Thrash ? Nay. Influences are extremely numerous and start from Venom atmospheres to Bathory epic songs, vocals reminding sometimes things like Storm or Isengard with colored spikes typically thrash. Musically, don’t be surprised to find unique codes of Black Metal (just listen to "Early Dead"). Richness, depth sound, Candlemass and Satyricon effects... and how not to mention Celtic Frost "Monotheist" (therefore Tryptikon ...) listening to Come Warfare, The Entire Doom.
I personally liked the touch of nostalgia that emanates from Valkyrie and placed in the second position, the title comes as if to say that turning a page opens a new book.
The concept of the madness warrior of Bathory is apparent on the excellent Leave No Cross Unturned, a delicious hymn driven by those famous guitars effects which take us back to the direct Black Metal way. Exaggeration may be over but I feel in this album like a souvenir album of influences, a bunch of photos.
Sometimes, these two guys Nocturno Culto and Fenriz stir my curiosity and admiration as their world is heterogeneous. A particular maturity forged by time gives us the pleasure of listening to a group who plays as easily as a Cathedral, for example ("The Guessing Game"), or as a Sigh can do.
Newbies, this is the number one lesson, how to be self-operating by using undeniable influences. The excellence is that “The Underground Resistance” ... without any rational explanation, is really full of Darkthrone.
