Quatre ans après "The Rought Path of Nihilism", Sorrows Path revient à la conquête des baffles souffler sur nous un
vent de damnation. Ce nouvel opus de 2014 intitulé "Doom Philosophy" ancre définitivement leur amour
pour les ténèbres.
A la première écoute, j’ai été ravie d’entendre à
nouveau la voix d’Angelos qui a vraiment du cachet. Impossible de ne pas la
reconnaître entre mille, c’est la valeur sûre du groupe.
La musique semble s’être étoffée, le ton est plus
grave ce qui rend cette « philosophie de la damnation » plus sérieuse
tant son côté sombre est nettement plus travaillé que dans le premier album.
Les guitares ont évoluées, considérablement, c’est une belle surprise. Elles
jouent plus dans les graves, les notes sont plus allongées, sombres, et comble
du bonheur – disons-le – la batterie est beaucoup mieux mise à l’honneur. C’est
une véritable colonne vertébrale qui donne à la musique de l’album entier une
tenue irréprochable. Je déplore simplement que la basse ne soit pas assez
audible…
Tout est plus structuré, le cœur y a été pour
beaucoup, cette passion première, mais on sent que ce projet a été bien pensé,
lentement mais sûrement. Bref, pour moi, c’est une réussite.
Les thèmes abordés sont toujours les mêmes et
malheureusement les paroles manquent de profondeur, de poésie ; mais c’est
en Anglais on passera outre. Comme dit plus haut, on célèbre le noir et ses
amantes ténèbres, âmes obscures, pensées morbides et autres joyeusetés !
First Beam of
Darkness into Light offre une entrée en matière plutôt douce, un rien mélancolique. Suivie par Tragedy dans laquelle Edgar Rivera (ex-guitariste de Solitude Aeturnus) prends les rennes des cordes électriques ! Attention, solo de folie !
Le titre Brother
of Life saura émouvoir quiconque car il s’agît là d’un « frère »
ayant déjà passé la rive de l’au-delà.
Sur Everything
Can Change il existe un featuring avec Snowy Shaw que l’on ne présente
plus : Notre Dame, ex-Dream of Evil, ex-King Diamond, ex-Mercyful
Fate et ex-Memento Mori. Sa voix
se marie à merveille avec celle d’Angelos, ajoutant une touche plus malsaine au
titre.
Clouds Inside Me est un des titres les plus travaillés de l’album. Le
final est tout simplement grandiose et donne le ton à Darkness, qui n’est pas sans rappeler le style du refrain de Prostitute que l’on retrouve sur le
premier album. Epoasis m’y fait
également un peu penser dans des notes plus doom.
Damned (O)fish/L.S.D. est pour le moins surprenant. Dans un genre Metal
Progressif avec interlude un rien jazzy, il y a comme un dialogue entre les
deux guitares traitant de l’éternité sous forme d’actes joués en notes saccadées.
Impressionnant théâtre qui fait tomber le rideau sur cet opus riche en
variations, digne des albums phares qu’un groupe puisse réaliser dans sa vie. Fantastique.

this is the end of my Samsara… this is my Nirvana ! »
Une fois de plus, je regrette de ne pas avoir le
support en main pour mieux vous parler de la couverture, des paroles et du
contenu du livret mais seulement des mp3 promo grâce auxquels je peux au moins
rédiger cette chronique.
La cover réalisée par l’Autrichienne
Lisa
Heschl est simple mais efficace,
représentant un hibou sur un rocher, tout cela dans des tons gris (sauf les
yeux du rapace et une rangée de griffures ensanglantées sur son aile). Cette
description relativement pauvre ne me semble pas leur faire justice mais je
vous demande de ne pas en tenir compte car si vous avez aimé "The Rought Path of Nihilism" alors vous
adorerez "Doom Philosophy". Et pour
information, le nouveau logo de Sorrows
Path a été conçu par le Belge Christophe Szpajdel (Moonspell, Arcturus, Dimmu Borgir).

dès que possible si vous voulez embrasser les ombres dans une aura mi-Heavy mi-Doom.

Four years later after "The Rought Path of Nihilism", Sorrows Path returns to the conquest of baffles to blow on us a
wind of damnation. This new opus from 2014 entitled "Doom Philosophy" anchors definitively their love for the
darkness.
In the first listening, I was
delighted to hear again the voice of Angelos which is really full of character.
Impossible to not recognize it between one thousand, it is the safe bet of the
band. The music seems to have filled out, the tone is graver what makes this doom
philosophy more serious so much its dark side is clearly more worked than in
the first album. Guitars evolved, considerably, it is a beautiful surprise. They
play more in bass lines, notes are more stretched out, dark, and height of the
happiness – let us say it – the drums are much better put in the honor. It is
the real vertebral column which gives to the whole album’s music an
irreproachable holding.
I simply
regret that the bass guitar is not rather audible…
Everything is more structured,
the heart had a lot to do with passion there, but we feel that this project was
well thought, slowly but surely. In brief, for me, it is a success.
Tackled issues are always the
same and unfortunately the words are lacking depth in poetry, but it is in
English so we will pass besides. As said higher, we celebrate blackness and his
mistresses darkness, dark souls, morbid thoughts and other pleasures !
First Beam of Darkness Into Light offers a rather soft
introduction, a melancholic mere nothing. Follow by Tragedy in which Edgar Rivera (ex-guitarist of Solitude Aeturnus) takes reindeers of the electric ropes ! Beware a
madness solo !
The song Brother of Life will know how to move whoever because this is a
"brother" having already crossed the bank of the afterlife. On Everything Can Change it exists a
featuring with Snowy Shaw that we do not present any more : Notre Dame, ex-Dream of Evil, ex-King
Diamond, ex-Mercyful Fate and
ex-Memento Mori. His voice gets
married marvelously with Angelos’ one, adding a more unhealthy touch to the
title.
Clouds Inside Me is one of the most worked
songs in this album. The final is simply great and sets the tone of Darkness, who’s reminiscent of the tune’s
style of Prostitute which we can find
on the first album. Epoasis also
reminds me it a little bit in more doom notes.
Damned (O)fish/L.S.D. is surprising at least. In a Progressive
Metal kind, with a little jazzy interlude, there is a dialogue between both
guitars dealing with eternity in the form of acts played in jerky notes. Impressive
theater which brings down the curtain on this opus rich of variations, worthy
of key albums which a band can realize in its life. Fantastic.

One more time, I regret having
no CD in hand to talk better about the cover, the lyrics and the contents of
the notebook but only promo mp3 which I can draft at least this review.
The cover realized by the Austrian Lisa Heschl is simple but effective,
representing an owl on a rock, all this is in grey tones (except the bird’s
eyes of prey and the row of scratches stained with blood on his wing). This
relatively poor description does not seem to me giving them credit but I ask
you not to take it into account because if you liked "The Rought Path of Nihilism" so you will adore "Doom Philosophy". And for information, the new
Sorrows Path logo was designed by
the Belgian Christophe Szpajdel (Moonspell, Arcturus, Dimmu Borgir).
Get this album as soon as possible if you want to embrace the shadows in a half-Heavy,
half-Doom aura.
