Chapitre 1 : Blackest Magick… in Paris.

Juillet 2015 aura marqué certains fans de l’empreinte de "Hammer of the Witches", dernier opus nocturne des indétrônables Cradle of Filth. C’est ainsi que nous avons décidé de prendre part à la tournée européenne permettant de découvrir ce dernier – intitulée Inquisitional Tourture – dont le tout premier chapitre se déroulait nous concernant à Paris, plus précisément au Cabaret Sauvage.

C’est ainsi que nous avons eu l’immense plaisir d’échanger avec Richard Shaw – guitariste passionné et intègre – juste après l’excellente prestation délivrée en ces lieux. Malgré la fatigue, il nous aura éclairés sur cette tournée revigorante ainsi que sur la set-list éclectique offerte par Cradle of Filth. Nous lui laissons à présent la parole…

Vlad Tepes : Nous sommes ici avec Richard de Cradle of Filth, guitariste de fait. Comment vas-tu ?

Richard Shaw : Ca va très bien, plutôt fatigué mais je me sens bien.

Vlad : Sens-tu bon ?

Richard : Je sens fantastique !

Vlad : Fantastique ?

Richard : Fantastique ! Plutôt… Je ne sens pas bon du tout, un concert vraiment moite ce soir.

Vlad : Nous sommes à l’intérieur du Cabaret Sauvage à Paris. Le show était très intense, très chaud de fait. Comment caractériserais-tu ce concert en comparaison aux autres concerts de cette tournée ?

Richard : Tous les concerts de la tournée ont été géniaux, mais il y a quelque chose de vraiment cool pour cette salle, cette sorte de cirque : cela donne une autre atmosphère qu’aucun autre concert n’avait. Je pense que tout le monde le sent, le groupe l’a senti. Quand nous sommes entrés pour installer, nous étions là « Ca va être quelque chose de spécial ». J’espère que les fans ont ressenti que c’était quelque chose de spécial, car cela n’arrive pas souvent de pouvoir jouer dans des lieux comme ça, cela offre au concert un autre niveau.

Vlad : C’est la première fois que Cradle joue ici de fait.

Richard : Vraiment ? Je ne le savais pas.

Vlad : Ils ont joué à l’Elysée-Montmartre, le Bataclan et d’autres, mais jamais ici.

Richard : J’ai joué avec eux au Bataclan l’année dernière quand j’ai rejoint le groupe pour la première fois donc je savais à quoi m’attendre des fans parisiens. Mais ce soir encore mieux je trouve. J’ai adoré chaque moment.

Vlad : Connais-tu le Circus of Horrors ? Te souviens-tu d’eux ?

Richard : Je me rappelle très bien d’eux. Je ne sais pas si les gens le savent mais je suis sur le DVD “Cradle of Filth à Nottingham Rock City” (NDLR : intitulé “Heavy, Left-Handed and Candid”, paru en 2001), ma ville natale. C’était mon premier concert là-bas et le Circus of Horrors étaient avec eux à ce moment-là. Je connais très bien le Circus of Horrors.

Vlad : Cela aurait été excellent de les faire jour ici – jouer, se produire de fait.

Richard : Oui cela aurait été excellent mais… je ne sais pas, demande à Dani s’il peut les faire venir la prochaine fois.

Vlad : Oui nous demanderons à Dani. Que penses-tu de cet endroit du Cabaret Sauvage ? Tu as joué dans différents lieux : est-ce l’endroit le plus spécial que tu connais jusqu’à présent ?

Richard : Je le pense oui car selon mon expérience pas mal de salles commencent à devenir assez similaires. Il y avait quatre concerts traités sur le plan acoustique. Mais pour cette salle c’est comme l’ancien temps, c’est génial. C’est comme… nous avons joués à Koko, à Londres, ça ressemble à un ancien théâtre. Et comme je l’ai dit auparavant, cela rend le concert très spécial car si tu ne regardes pas la foule, le bâtiment n’est pas habituel ; partout où tu regardes il y a quelque chose de nouveau et cela rend le concert stimulant et frais.

Vlad : Y a-t-il quelques mots – un, deux ou trois mots – qui pourraient synthétiser ce concert pour toi ?

Richard : Chaud, bruyant…

Vlad : Pas trop bruyant !

Richard : … pas trop mais suffisamment bruyant, et incroyable.

Vlad : Juste incroyable ?

Richard : Incroyable. Excellents fans. Un excellent concert, vraiment un très bon concert, je ne pouvais pas attendre mieux.

Vlad : Pour nous aussi. J’étais tout devant et c’était vraiment incroyable. Difficile tu vois, mais incroyable.

Richard : Ça l’était.

Vlad : Je suis d’accord. Y a-t-il une ou deux chansons dans lesquels tu t’es le plus investi durant ce concert ?

Richard : Du point de vue de l’écriture ou de l’interprétation ?

Vlad : De l’interprétation.

Richard : Je pense avoir été investi dans tout. Mais durant les premiers shows je peux l’être un peu plus facilement, je ne fais pas comme Dani qui vérifie sans cesse si le son est bon, vérifiant tout. Et après cela je sens que je peux vraiment m’y plonger. Lord Abortion est probablement la numéro une ; elle n’est pas vraiment délirante au niveau de la guitare donc quand cette main ne fait rien je peux faire tout un tas de trucs. Queen of Winter, Throned c’est toujours un grand plaisir et probablement aussi Deflowering the Maidenhead, Displeasuring the Goddess est très plaisant à jouer live : nous pensions qu’elle serait bonne live et même en la jouant durant le premier concert à Nottingham Rock City elle avait quelque chose de vraiment spécial. Nous pensions qu’elle serait bonne mais la jouer live « Wow c’est intense ». Le public fut plutôt délirant pour celle-ci aussi, beaucoup de plaisir.

Vlad : Y a-t-il un ancien titre que tu préfères au sein de cette set-list ?

Richard : Un vieux titre…

Vlad : Pour l’ensemble des concerts.

Richard : Pour l’ensemble des concerts… Queen of Winter, Throned est tellement plaisant car il est très long et en tant que guitariste il est très intéressant à jouer, il y a tellement de choses qui se passent. Malice through the Looking Glass aussi, car une fois de plus du point de vue de la guitare ce n’est pas délirant mais c’est le moment du set où tu peux regarder les fans faire « yeah… »… j’adore ça. C’est un break soudain mais c’est une chanson si classique. Je veux dire – je suis sûr que les gens ne le savent pas – j’étais un fan du groupe avant de l’intégrer et Malice a toujours été une de mes préférées. Donc quand Dani et Martin ont dit « Essayons d’intégrer Malice au set » j’étais là « S’il-vous-plait faisons Malice ». Car en tant que guitariste c’est tellement plaisant mais ce n’est pas effréné, mais tu peux regarder l’audience et tout le monde adore. C’est une excellente chanson.

Vlad : Et qu’en est-il de Bathory Aria également ? Dani avait parlé de peut-être la jouer durant cette tournée, mais…

Richard : Je vais être honnête, nous ne l’avons pas répété. Nous en avons parlé et nous en parlons depuis que moi et Ashok avons rejoint le groupe, car il s’agissait d’une de ces choses où nous étions là « Maintenant nous avons deux guitaristes qui sont arrivés, qui souhaitent jouer absolument tout et le rendre aussi fidèle que possible à l’album ». Ce pourquoi nous ne jouons pas Bathory Aria… c’était moi ou Ashok qui l’ont suggéré, nous étions là « Wow, je ne sais pas » et je sais que Dani en a parlé en interviews. Mais nous en sommes au point où nous avions déjà Queen of Winter, Throned, nous voulions vraiment la faire. Bathory Aria… qui sait ! Peut-être sur les prochaines tournées. Nous avons un break entre terminer l’Europe et commencer aux Etats-Unis. Qui sait ! Peut-être nous en inclurons certaines pour les fans américains, nous verrons bien.

Vlad : Et y a-t-il un titre récent que tu préfères ? Peut-être issu de "Hammer of the Witches" ?

Richard : D’un point de vue purement égoïste – car c’est moi qui l’ai écrit – est Blackest Magick in Practice. Jouer celui-ci, notamment parce que le premier concert fut à Nottingham – ma ville natale – la première fois que Blackest Magick in Practice fut joué était dans ma ville natale, une salle où j’ai vus cinquante groupes ou plus. C’était vraiment spécial. Mais en ayant dit ça, chaque chanson du nouvel album que nous jouons sont tellement jouissives comme Deflowering the Maidenhead, Displeasuring the Goddess, comme je l’ai dit auparavant. Yours Immortally a un jeu de guitare où ça part dans tous les sens, c’est génial à jouer, si frénétique. Quelle autre avons-nous jouée ?... J’ai complètement oublié : Blackest Magick… Right Wing of the Garden Triptych ! Le gros single bien évidemment, comment ai-je pu l’oublier ! Dans celle-ci aussi je peux vraiment rentrer dedans et emporter la foule. A un point où je peux même enlever mes deux mains de la guitare durant celle-ci. Toutes sont vraiment jouissives à jouer.

Vlad : Et qu’en est-il du titre-éponyme Hammer of the Witches qui est beau, mélancolique… absolument tout !

Richard : Oui Hammer of the Witches est  excellent mais nous ne l’avons pas répété en live jusqu’à maintenant. Qui sait, plein de gens me l’ont réclamé, pensant « Hammer of the Witches est le nom de l’album, pourquoi ne pas le jouer live ? », c’est le titre-éponyme après tout. Nous l’avons réalisé, qui sait dans le futur nous pourrions le faire mais pour le moment nous n’avons pas planifié de le faire sur cette tournée malheureusement.

Vlad : Ma dernière question concerne ton intégration au sein de Cradle of Filth. La dernière fois que nous avons échangé tu n’étais alors qu’un membre de session. Qu’est-ce que cela fait d’être un véritable membre filthien ?

Richard : C’est vraiment fantastique. Le dernier concert que nous avons fait était le 1^er mars 2014 à la fin de la tournée européenne avec Behemoth. Et nous étions sur le chemin du retour vers le Royaume-Uni, nous étions dans le tour-bus et Dani me dit : « Tu as vraiment aimé, n’est-ce pas ? Tu as pris du plaisir ? ». Et j’ai dit : « Evidemment j’ai pris du plaisir ! C’est un rêve de faire ça, merci beaucoup ». Car je pensais que c’était bon, que j’allais juste rentrer à la maison et ne plus jamais le refaire. « Merci beaucoup, je ne l’oublierais jamais ». Et il m’a regardé : «  Tu t’es amusé, n’est-ce pas ? ». « Oui oui, bien évidemment ». Et il a continué : «  Aimerais-tu continuer à le faire ? ». « Que veux-tu dire ? ». Et il a dit : « Tu écris le nouvel album avec nous et chaque concert que nous ferons tu les feras en tant que membre à plein temps ». Et j’ai dit : « Bien entendu ». Qui aurait dit non à ma place ? Donc je suis une personne très chanceuse, je sais à quel point je le suis.

Vlad : Et un guitariste vraiment talentueux aussi.

Richard : Merci beaucoup. J’essaie ! J’aime jouer de la guitare, jouer la musique de Cradle donc je veux donner le meilleur concert possible et le rendre le plus fidèle possible à l’album. Et avec Ashok nous en sommes là tous les deux, passer en revue tous les détails et rendre le morceau le plus fidèle possible à l’album et donner aux fans ce pourquoi ils ont payé.

Vlad : Et ce qui est intéressant avec toi est que ce soit un vieux fan qui interprète les chansons de Cradle à destination d’autres fans.

Richard : Tout à fait. Une fois de plus c’est pour cela que je mets des tas de trucs sur ma page facebook et ce genre de choses pour que les gens puissent voir ce que c’est que d’être un fan arrivant dans le groupe. Il y a un tas de personnes qui tuerait pour être à ma place donc je veux qu’ils voient ce que c’est d’être à l’intérieur. Je suis un garçon très chanceux.

Vlad : Et de fait je tuerais pour ça tu vois, mais je ne te tuerais pas !

Richard : C’est bon à savoir ! Au moins attends la fin de la tournée !

Vlad : Ok, sans souci ! (rires)

Vlad : Donc nous sommes à la fin de cette courte interview. Nous nous verrons demain. Et donc la dernière phrase de cette interview…

July 2015 left a mark on some fans with the "Hammer of the Witches" trace, last opus nocturne of overthrown Cradle of Filth. That’s how we decided to took part to the European tour to discover this last one – entitled Inquisitional Tourture – whose first chapter unfolded in Paris for our part, more precisely at the Cabaret Sauvage.

So we had the huge delight to exchange with Richard Shaw – passionate and upright guitar player – just after the excellent performance released in this location. Despite the tiredness, he enlightened us about this invigorating tour as well as the eclectic set list offered by Cradle of Filth. Now we give the floor to him…

Vlad Tepes: We’re here with Richard from Cradle of Filth, guitar player in fact. How are you?

Richard Shaw: I’m very good, very tired but feeling great.

Vlad: Do you smell good?

Richard: I smell fantastic!

Vlad: Fantastic?

Richard: Fantastic! Kind of… I don’t smell good at all, very sweaty gig tonight.

Vlad: We’re inside the Cabaret Sauvage in Paris. The show was very intense, very hot in fact. How do you characterize this show in comparison with other shows in this tour?

Richard: All the shows in this whole tour have been brilliant, but there’s something about this venue that is so cool, the whole kind of circus: it gives another vibe that none of other shows had. I think everybody feels that, the band felt it. When we walked in to set, we were like “This is gonna be something special”. I hope the fans felt it was something special as well, because it’s not very often you get to play in places like this, it gave the show another level.

Vlad: It’s the first time Cradle play here in fact.

Richard: Is it? I didn’t know that.

Vlad: They played inside Elysée-Montmartre, Bataclan and others but here never.

Richard: I played the Bataclan with them last year when I first joined the band so I knew what to expect from Parisian fans. But tonight I think even better. Loved it, loved every moment.

Vlad: Do you know the Circus of Horrors? Do you remember them?

Richard: I remember them well. I don’t know if people know this but I was actually on the DVD “Cradle of Filth in Nottingham Rock City” (NDLR : entitled “Heavy, Left-Handed and Candid”, released in 2001), my hometown. That was the first show I was there and the Circus of Horrors were with them at the moment. I know the Circus of Horrors very well.

Vlad: It would have been great to make them play here – play, perform in fact.

Richard: Yeah it would have been brilliant but… I don’t know, ask Dani if he can bring them next time.

Vlad: We’ll ask to Dani in fact. What do you think about this location of the Cabaret Sauvage? You played in many places: this is the most special place you know until now?

Richard: I think so because in my experience a lot of venues are starting to be similar. There’re made four show acoustically treated. But for this venue it’s like back to the old days, it looks great. It’s like… we played in Koko, in London, that’s like an old theatre. Again like I said before, it makes the show extra special because if you aren’t looking at the crowd, the building doesn’t look the same; everywhere you look there’s something new and it keeps the show exciting and fresh.

Vlad: Are there some words – one, two or three words – that can sum up this show for you?

Richard: Hot, loud…

Vlad: Not too loud!

Richard: … not too loud but loud enough, and incredible.

Vlad: Just incredible?

Richard: Incredible. Great fans. A great show, a really good show, couldn’t ask for anything better.

Vlad: For us too. I was in the front and it was very incredible. Hard you know, but incredible.

Richard: It was.

Vlad: I agree. Are there one or two songs you were most invested in during this particular show?

Richard: From a writing point of view or performing?

Vlad: Performing.

Richard: I think I was involved in everything. But the first few shows I can get it a little bit easier, I don’t to get in the way of Dani always checking if the sound’s okay, checking everything else. And after that I feel that I can really get into it. Probably Lord Abortion is the big one; it’s not as crazy for guitar so when this hand is doing anything I can do all kinds of stuff. Queen of Winter, Throned that’s always a lot of fun and probably Deflowering the Maidenhead, Displeasuring the Goddess as well is a lot of fun live: we thought it’ll be good live and even playing the first show in Nottingham Rock City it had something special about it. We thought it’ll be good but actually playing it live “Wow this is intense”. The crowd was pretty crazy for that one as well, a lot of fun.

Vlad: Is there maybe one old song that you prefer inside this setlist?

Richard: An old song…

Vlad: For all shows.

Richard: For all shows… Queen of Winter, Throned is so much fun because it’s so long and as a guitar player it’s very interesting to play, there’s so much going on. Malice through the Looking Glass as well, because again from a guitar point of view it’s not crazy but it’s the little bit in the set where you can look at the fans going “yeah…”… loving it. It’s a harsh break in the set but it’s such a classic song. I mean – I’m sure people don’t know that – I was a fan of the band before I joined and Malice was always one of my favorite. So when Dani and Martin said “Let’s try to put Malice in the set” I was like “Please please come and do Malice”. ‘Cause as a guitar player it’s so much fun but it’s not frantic, but you can look at the crowd and everyone is loving it. It’s a great song.

Vlad: And what about the Bathory Aria too? Dani talked about maybe playing it during this tour, but…

Richard: I’ll be honest, we didn’t rehearse it. We’ve talked about it and we’ve been talking about it ever since me and Ashok joined the band, ‘cause it was one of those things we were like “Now we’ve got two guitar players who are coming on, who’re willing to play absolutely anything and make it faithful to the record as possible”. Why we don’t do Bathory Aria… it was me or Ashok that suggested it, we were like “Wow, I don’t know, I don’t know about that” and I know Dani has talked about it in interviews. But we’re at the point where we’ve already got Queen of Winter, Throned, we definitely wanted to do that. Bathory Aria… who knows! Maybe on the next few tours. We’ve got a break now between finishing in Europe and starting in the U.S. Who knows! Maybe we’ll put a couple of extra ones for the U.S. fans, we’ll see.

Vlad: And is there one recent song that you like the most? Maybe from "Hammer of the Witches"?

Richard: From a pure selfish point of view – because I wrote it – was Blackest Magick in Practice. Playing that one, especially the first show was in Nottingham – my hometown – was the first time Blackest Magick in Practice gets played is in my hometown, a venue I’ve seen fifty or more bands. That was really special. But saying that, every song we’re playing from the new album is so much fun like Deflowering the Maidenhead, Displeasuring the Goddess like I’ve said before. Yours Immortally is a guitar playing where it’s all over the place, so much fun to play, so frantic. And what another we’re playing?... I’ve completely forgot: Blackest Magick… Right Wing of the Garden Triptych! Of course the big single, how can I forget that one! That’s another one where I can really get into it and get the crowd going. A point where I can even take off both hands of the guitar for that one. All of them are a lot of fun to play.

Vlad: And what about the title-track Hammer of the Witches which is beautiful, melancholic… everything!

Richard: Yeah Hammer of the Witches is great but we didn’t rehearse it live yet. Who knows, a lot of people have been asking for it, thinking “Hammer of the Witches is the name of the album, why won’t play it live?”, it’s the title-track after all. We realized that, who knows in the future we might do it but at the moment we’re not planning to do it on this tour unfortunately.

Vlad: My last question will be about your integration inside the Filth. The last time we talked you were just a session member. What does it feels to be a true filthy member?

Richard: It feels fantastic. Last show I did was March 1^st 2014 in the end of European tour with Behemoth. And we were on the way back to the UK, we were in the tour bus and Dani said to me: “You did enjoy it, didn’t you? You did have fun?”. And I was: “Of course I had fun! This is like my dream to do this, thank you very much”. ‘Cause I thought that was it, that I’m just going home and never do it again. “Thank you very much, I’ll never forget it”. And he just looks at me: “You did have fun, didn’t you?”. “Yeah yeah, of course”. And he goes: ”Would you like to keep doing it?”. “What do you mean?”. And he was like : “You write the new album with us and every show we ever do you’re going to do it as a full time member”. And I’ve said: “Of course”. Who would say no in my situation? So I’m a very lucky person, I know how lucky I am.

Vlad: And a very talented guitar played too.

Richard: Thank you. I try! I do enjoy playing guitar, playing Cradle’s music so I want to give the best show possible and make it faithful to the record as possible. And with Ashok we’re both there, going all over the details and make it faithful to the record and give the fans what they pay for.

Vlad: And what is interesting with you is that this is an old fan of the band that performs the Cradle songs for other fans. So this is a very interesting approach.

Richard: It is. Again that’s why I put lots of things on my facebook page and things like that because I want people to see what it’s like as a fan coming into the band. There’re a lot of people that would kill to be in my position so I want them to see what it’s like on the inside. I’m a very lucky boy.

Vlad: And in fact I would kill for this you know, but I won’t kill you!

Richard: That’s good to know! At least wait to the end of the tour!

Vlad: Ok, no problem! (laughs)

Richard: (laughs)

Vlad: So this is the end of this short interview. We’ll see us tomorrow. And the last sentence of this interview…
